Corporate Social Responsiblity
40 years have passed since we first entered Indonesia. It is thanks to locals, who have supported and collaborated with us, that we are where we are. Now part of the local community, we wanted to translate our gratitude into meaningful action, supporting educational facilities, ensuring a bright future for children in Indonesia.
There are many primary and junior high schools, Islamic boarding schools, and orphanage’s in the vicinity of our factories. To contribute to the creation of a safe environment for the local children to study, we periodically visit and support these facilities.
Supporting the Local Community
Our Activities in Gresik
Since 2023, we have extended our support to more than 30 local facilities. While our standard contributions include donating essential school supplies like stationery, bookshelves, and computers, each facility faces unique challenges. For example, we encountered a school forced to hold classes under a collapsed roof because they lacked the budget for structural repairs.
In these urgent situations, we went beyond simply providing raw materials; Nankai Plywood’s own internal construction team travelled directly to the site to personally execute the physical repairs.
Our Activities in Lumajang
Since 2023, we have supported 25 facilities across Lumajang, with a strong focus on educational facilities. Because Lumajang is a primarily rural region, schools here operate with significantly fewer resources than their urban counterparts, resulting in a completely different set of needs.
To address this, we focus on establishing the fundamental building blocks of a solid learning environment. By supplying critical classroom fixtures like whiteboards, desks, and bookshelves, we help create safe, comfortable spaces where students can focus fully on their education.
Disaster Relief: Recovery and Reconstruction Following the Mount Semeru Eruptions
On December 1, 2020, and again on December 4, 2021, twice within a single year, large-scale eruptions occurred at Mount Semeru (3,676 m), located just 15 km north of our Lumajang Factory. The resulting pyroclastic flows and heavy volcanic ash blanketing surrounding villages mixed with subsequent rainfall, triggering massive lahars (volcanic mudflows) that severely devastated the local community.
Rapid Disaster Relief and Essential Supplies
On the day of the eruption, we mobilized an emergency relief team to swiftly prepare life-saving essentials, including drinking water, rice, instant food, and diapers. Working in close coordination with the military, police, and local government agencies, we maintained a continuous supply chain to the affected villages.
Additionally, recognizing the profound physical and mental toll of prolonged displacement in deteriorating hygienic conditions, we distributed masks and face shields to prevent the spread of COVID-19 during the evacuation and recovery efforts.
Our Commitment to the Local Community
Aside from our factory, very few large-scale businesses exist in this region. Driven by a profound sense of responsibility, that it is our duty to protect the safety of the local residents who support us daily, our employees took personal initiative to actively drive on-the-ground recovery efforts. The Nankai Plywood Group will always stand firmly by our communities, remaining a partner they can rely on, especially in times of hardship.
COVID-19 Pandemic Relief Efforts
Beginning in March 2020, the spread of COVID-19 emerged as a major social crisis in Indonesia. The situation escalated drastically in June 2021 due to a rapid surge in infections, placing the country under some of the most severe pandemic conditions in Southeast Asia.
Amid these challenging circumstances, many local residents lost their jobs and faced extreme financial hardship. To help sustain families through this crisis, we provided continuous relief distributions, supplying food and other daily essentials to those in need.
Furthermore, as the exponential rise in cases triggered a shortage of medical oxygen and cylinders, straining the local healthcare system to its limits, we stepped in to loan oxygen cylinders directly to the local health bureau. Believing that a crisis demands a full response, we maximized our available corporate resources and dedicated our efforts to supporting the community toward a swift recovery.
Participation in the GOOD ON ROOFS Project
Nankai Plywood actively participates in the sustainable initiative driven by the GOOD ON ROOFS Association. Under this partnership, solar panels have been installed on the rooftop of our Nagao Logistics Center (Sanuki City, Kagawa Prefecture). A portion of the income generated from this installation is donated.
These funds are used to bring lighting to schools in developing regions with low electrification rates, such as Africa, effectively raising educational standards and creating safer learning environments for local children.
Clean energy generated on a Japanese rooftop is helping to illuminate the future of children thousands of miles away. Moving forward, Nankai Plywood remains deeply committed to addressing social challenges and driving meaningful change globally.
